Top tip to stay active in your forties and beyond

Entering your forties is an exciting time! It may not feel that way at times but it’s a time that is full of new adventures and opportunities and we should embrace that!

One thing that is hugely important and makes this easier is staying active and maintaining your health and fitness or even starting to pay more attention if you haven’t until now.

Regular Exercise: Make exercise a non-negotiable part of your routine. Aim for a couple of hours a week at least.

Find Activities You Enjoy: A big one! – Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Explore different activities until you find ones you genuinely enjoy. Whether it’s gym, swimming, dancing, or yoga, there is 100% something out there for everyone.

Make Strength Training part of your routine: As we age, maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important. Incorporate strength training exercises into your routine to help preserve muscle mass, improve bone density, and boost metabolism.

Stay Consistent: Consistency is key when it comes to seeing results and maintaining your fitness level, you’ve heard it before but imagine you did something consistently for a year, where would you be and what would you have achieved? Make exercise a habit by scheduling it into your week around your other non-negotiable commitments and treat it as you would any other important appointment.

Prioritise your nutrition: It’s important for everyone to have a balanced diet at any age but even more so as we age to make sure we live as long as we can, that doesn’t mean boring, over restrictive ‘diets’ eat more of the more nutritious stuff and enjoy some of the less nutritious stuff in smaller amounts- balance is key!

Set Realistic Goals: Another super important one! achievable goals that align with your fitness level and lifestyle. Whether it’s running a 5K, mastering a new yoga pose, or simply being able to keep up with your kids or grandkids, having something to work towards can and does help keep you motivated and builds on that consistency.

Stay Active Throughout the Day: Look for opportunities to stay active throughout the day, even when you’re not training. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or go for a walk during your lunch break are great examples.

Be Flexible: Be flexible and adaptable with your fitness routine. Life can be unpredictable, so be willing to adjust your workouts as needed to accommodate changes in schedule or circumstances.Remember, staying active in your forties is not just about physical health—it’s also about mental and emotional well-being. Regular exercise can help reduce stress, improve mood, boost energy levels, and enhance overall quality of life.
